Students at Aligarh Muslim University staged a sit-in on Sunday demanding the arrest of religious leader Narasimhanand Saraswati. The students allege that his remarks against the Prophet were wrong and should be arrested.
The protesters, who were marching at University Gate, are demanding immediate arrest of Narasimhanand. Not only this, the students submitted a memorandum to the local authorities accusing them of fomenting discord between various religious groups and thereby damaging the peace of the land. The memorandum distributed states that the Prophet prohibited Muslims from hurting the religious sentiments of others.
The notice addressed to President Ram Nath Kovind called for a special stringent law to punish those trying to promote maliciousness and hatred among religious groups. Students appeal for peace and harmony among all, but such statements and comments made by deeply religious leaders may worsen the situation. Later student leader Farhan Zubairi urged punitive action against Narasimhanand.
