Mumbai: A case was registered against Aligarh Muslim University alumnus Shazil Usmani in Pune on Tuesday. It was alleged against Usmani that he had allegedly fostered enmity between various groups through his speech at a recent Elgar Council event.
In Maharashtra, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused Usmani of taking stern action against him, accusing him of hurting religious sentiments. Pune Police Commissioner Amitabh Gupta said that a case has been registered against Usmani under Section 153 (A) of the IPC. He said that a complaint was filed against Usmani by Pradeep Gavade, the local leader of the BJP Yuva Morcha. He said that further investigation was going on in the case.
On the other hand, BJP veteran and former CM of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday alleged that Usmani had hurt the sentiments of Hindus during his speech at the recently held Elgar Parishad conference in Pune and he has tightened the demand for Usmani Approved. The conference was held on Saturday and the participants included noted novelist Arundhati Roy, former IPS officer SM Mushrif, former Bombay High Court judge BG Kolse-Patil and Usmani.
